In what would have been our class of 2023’s graduation month, the University of Cumbria is marking the occasion by honouring two graduates for being exceptional role models inside and outside of university life.

Three new University of Cumbria graduates are celebrating after scooping accolades in a series of influential industry awards that recognise young and emerging creative talent. Graphic design graduates Tim Stewart and Jacob Towle are among the winners of the 2023 D&AD New Blood Awards and illustrator Ed Merlin Murray is 'One to Watch' according to the charity which inspires and celebrates excellence in design and advertising.

When student teachers in Lancashire were forced to cancel a key conference about inclusion that they had spent months planning they made sure their efforts to help others were not thwarted by the impact of the coronavirus pandemic. Instead, items and funds raised by University of Cumbria students on a four-year BA Hons Primary Education with QTS in Inclusion/SEND (special educational needs) course have been given to a local foodbank and disability swimming club.

A student radiographer who returned to placement to support the NHS during the coronavirus pandemic has had her video diary account featured on national news. Ismat Khan, a 19 year old radiography student from Preston, returned to placement at the Royal Preston Hospital in June to care for patients exhibiting symptoms of COVID-19.

Today Vice Chancellor Professor Julie Mennell leads University of Cumbria in congratulating its Class of 2023. In the week that the university would usually welcome its latest graduands to Carlisle for a series of graduation ceremonies, the Vice Chancellor leads the congratulations in a new video that recognises and celebrates the achievements and impact of its Class of 2023. Informal virtual celebrations with staff and students have also been held across the university's five institutes.

University of Cumbria has been rated as top in the North West and amongst the best in the UK for graduate employability, with 96% of all its graduates in employment or undertaking further study within 15 months of graduating.

A national charitable body formed to bring fresh thinking on food production, farming and rural community support is set to make important steps forward in Cumbria. The Food, Farming and Countryside Commission’s work in the county is being hosted by University of Cumbria and one of its PhD students will play a key role as the Cumbria inquiry’s coordinator in a far-reaching programme to put some of the 15 recommendations in place.
